UMW Visits United Methodist Children's Home

Seventeen of our  United Methodist Women's group (and 3 of the husbands) traveled to Mandeville Saturday, March 29, 2009 to the Methodist Home for Children.  We took "goody bags" to each of the 18 youth,  refreshments which we shared with them and some board games, movies and  linens.  We all had a great visit with them, toured the facility and plan to have a Vacation Bible School there in July.   One of the young men said, "You have to have it before July 14th because I will be leaving then," which made us feel good.    They were all so appreciative of everything.

The second week in July eleven of our members went to Mandeville, LA to hold a Vacation Bible School with the
youth at Methodist Home for Children. What a wonderful week we had! The youth didn’t take long to warm up and
become a part of the “Bayou Bash” VBS we shared with them. Each morning we began with praise songs, then
shared in group—after which we played games, shared Bible stories, had refreshments and craft time. We
took stepping stone kits for each of the youth to make for their butterfly garden. This was a big hit and they did a great job—all were different and lovely. Several asked if they could take them when they leftthe home. We all left with a great feeling about the week and special feelings for these young people whohave been abused. Each of us drew a name of one of the
youth and plan to keep in touch through cards, etc. We will go back in the Fall with treats and to catch up on what’s going on in their lives. God bless them!

UMW Visits Dulac Community Center

A group of our UMW visited Dulac Community Center in August, and what a productive and blessed day we had.  We toured the facility and found a lot of progress from when we were there last year but still a long way to go.  The gym, which was full of clothing when we were there, now looks like a gym--all the clothing hanging in another room and the gym ready for play.  Upstairs is their new library and when we entered that room all we saw were books stacked everywhere--in boxes--you could hardly see the floor.  Our task for the day was the separate the books and put on shelves.  We thought, there is no way we will complete this, but guess what?  With nine of us working, we finished by early afternoon.  All the children's books were placed on shelves and adult books in another area with religious books and Bibles separated, etc. We felt a great sense of accomplishment.  Across the street from the center they have placed three large trailers, raised probably 10 feet, to house teams as they come to work.  This is in addition to the dormitories they have.  We plan to go back in the near future. There is still a lot to be done.
